Water enthusiasts, nature admirers, and people who love kayaking, canoeing, being on or by the water, are invited to participate in Paddle the Peace Aug. 15.
“Registration opens on June 1, and spots fill up quickly,” says Peace River recreation programmer Taylor Bak.
“It’s a very popular event in our area and it’s hosted every year because it’s such a great way to bring people together. This is the 17th year of Paddle the Peace and we’re hoping people will come to celebrate the natural beauty of our region.”
Bak says the Peace River is a stunning local feature, and Paddle the Peace gives participants a chance to experience it in a fun, relaxed, and safe way.
“It’s not just about paddling, it’s about connecting with nature, enjoying good food and live music, and spending quality time with others in the community,” she says.
Boats, canoes, kayaks and other floating vessels will have to be dropped off by participants at the Shaftesbury Ferry before they park vehicles and trailers at the Lower West Peace Boat Launch. Bak says after dropping off their vehicle and registering at the Lower West Peace Boat Launch, participants will be transported by bus back to the Shaftesbury Ferry to start their paddle.
“If you can supply your own vessel, you can participate and we welcome everyone,” explains Bak.
“The fee is $25 for the full day and $20 for the half day. We have experienced volunteers that are sweeps for each group of people, along with the Peace River Fire Department’s safety boat patrolling the water while paddlers are in the water.”
Any non-motorized vessel of your choice can be used, including kayaks, canoes, or a paddle board.
Paddle the Peace features two different legs to choose from.
“The half-day leg runs from the Shaftesbury Ferry to Strong Creek Campground and is perfect for beginner paddlers or those who prefer a shorter paddle,” says Bak.
“It’s a great option for anyone who doesn’t want to commit to a full day on the water. The full-day leg goes from the Shaftesbury Ferry all the way to the Lower West Peace Boat Launch, with a stop at Strong Creek Campground for lunch. This option is best suited for more experienced paddlers or those who are eager to spend the entire day enjoying the river.”
Paddle the Peace accepts 95 participants over two full-day groups and one half day group. Registration usually fills quickly, it’s important to register or to put your name on a waitlist in case of cancellations.
The event is pet friendly, and those who are comfortable with their dogs riding on the vessel are invited to do so. The event is in partnership of four municipalities: Town of Peace River, Northern Sunrise County, County of Northern Lights, and M.D. of Peace No. 145.
For more information or to register for the event visit PeaceRiver.ca/Registration, or call (780) 624-3204 to reserve your spot.
