KANANASKIS — Alberta Parks has announced that three previously first-come, first-served campsites in Kananaskis Country will now offer a reservation option heading into the 2026 season.
Cataract Creek Campground in Cataract Creek Provincial Recreation Area, Interlakes Campground in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and Paddy’s Flat Campground in Elbow River Provincial Recreation Area will be available for booking starting on March 30 at 9 a.m.
Arrival dates up until June 28 will be available for booking in accordance with Parks’ 90 day booking window that applies to individual campsites and backcountry camping.
“Alberta’s government is allowing Albertans and visitors who choose to plan in advance, the opportunity to enjoy more of Alberta’s great campsites by increasing the number of reserved spots in our campgrounds,” said the department of forestry and parks in an email.
Parks says that 40 per cent of sites within the three campgrounds will still remain first-come, first-served.
“We know that many campers also value the flexibility and spontaneity that first-come, first-served campsites offer, and we will continue to ensure these options remain available,” the statement said.
A non-refundable $12 fee is required to reserve a site.
Sites not booked in advance will be open on a first-come, first-served basis with the same-day registration fee waived, according to Parks.
“Alberta’s government will continue to work with its campground facility operators to monitor campsite use and camper feedback of the newly reservable campsites this season,” added the department.
Cataract Creek Campground, located 45 kilometres southwest of Longview on Highway 541, offers 102 unserviced campsites. West of Bragg Creek, Paddy’s Flats has 98 unserviced sites with Interlakes Campground, along the shore of Lower Kananaskis Lake at 48.
“We routinely review our campsite offerings and make adjustments each season in response to operational needs, visitation trends, and camper feedback.”
