MARATHON — A northeastern Ontario company has been contracted to coordinate installation of 10 small homes in the new Poppy Lane subdivision this year, and Mayor Rick Dumas says the homes should be ready for occupancy by November.
Dumas said in an interview Wednesday that the first of the economy-sized modular homes, each about 600 square feet, is expected to arrive next week.
It was expected weeks earlier, he said, but delivery from Northwestern Ontario company Nor-Fab was delayed “because of different conditions — weather, transportation, all the various things.”
Another nine homes will be built and installed “over the next several months” for occupancy “by the first of November.”
Town council on Monday approved a recommendation from CAO Daryl Skworchinski to contract Cochrane-based CGV Developments to manage final construction and installation of those homes, which will be available as rental units.
Up to nine more homes will be added for ownership, depending on demand.
“CGV is the company we hired to coordinate the negotiations with Nor-Fab, set up the plumbing, all the various things that need to be taken care of as the homes are being installed in the properties,” Dumas said.
CGV was brought on as a general coordinator, he said “because we don’t have the availability of staff within our organization.”
Skworchinski told council in a report that the total estimated cost for the first 10 homes is $2.56 million, largely funded by the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board and the federal Housing Accelerator Fund.
Poppy Lane is the name selected by council in March for the former Trailer Court Road after a public input process that drew dozens of name suggestions.
