If there’s any one thing a person likes to hear about a physician, it’s that they excel at precision.

Cars filled the parking lot of Georgian Winds with people lined up around the building, eager to be signed in to a first-come-first-serve slot for the newest addition to the health facility, Dr. Heidi Deboer.

While the crowded lot began to thin out as the day progressed, MidlandToday found Deboer inside with a mountain of filled-out forms on a desk.

A recent article in MidlandToday titled Province denies application for new family doctor in Elmvale’, pointed out that Deboer had been aiming to establish a new family medical practice in Springwater Township in early April, but was denied by the Ministry of Health.

According to the office of Sylvia Jones, deputy premier and minister of health, Deboer’s proposal in Elmvale “violated the FHO requirements as set out in the 2021 Physician Services Agreement (PSA) as negotiated by the OMA and ministry”, with Deboer advised of different models to apply to open a practice, resulting in success within Midland.

Andrea Jones, medical physician and co-founder of Georgian Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy, said that whenever a practice is adding patients, there has to be some form of sign-up.

“To a certain degree, that was occurring today,” said Jones, who stressed that under patient confidentiality she could not get into specific details.

“There had been plans to stretch it out, but patients made some choices and a lot came today. Dr. Deboer’s process has been incredibly efficient and very well planned out, and with the least amount of irritation to the patients in the community as possible. She did a great job,” Jones added.

Georgian Winds was constructed at the location of the former Wind Drifter restaurant and pool hall at 847 Vindin Street, opening its doors roughly a year and a half ago. Services offered by Georgian Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy include physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropody, sports medicine, and a pharmacy.
