Eganville – Canada day celebrations in Eganville will take on a different twist this year as the long-standing fireworks show is replaced with a drone show.
Bonnechere Valley Township is the first municipality in Renfrew County to replace the traditional fireworks with a drone show and so the final result will likely be watched with interest by other municipalities.
And thanks to a $5,000 donation from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories of Chalk River, Capital Drone of Ottawa will be increasing the number of drones hovering over the village next Wednesday night to 100. The more drones, the better the show.
The spectacular displays created utilize fleets of synchronized, illuminated drones that transform the night sky into a dynamic canvas. Unlike traditional fireworks, these aerial formations offer unprecedented precision, creating intricate patterns, shapes, and animations with remarkable accuracy.
The drone show will start at about 10 o’clock and feature several images such as spelling out the words Canada, Bonnechere Valley, Eganville, and perhaps the former townships of Grattan, South Algona and Sebastopol, a Canada flag, an outline of the Bonnechere Museum building, the CNL logo and several more.
“We are pretty excited about this,” Mayor Jennifer Murphy said. “The company sent us a list of the things they will be writing in the sky and it should be a really, really good show.”
She said the donation from CNL allowed the township to have Capital Drones provide 100 drones for the show, up from the 50 that was originally planned.
“It will be a better show for sure,” Mayor Murphy said. “Thanks to CNL for coming through. That’s a major donation for something like this. We were working within the budget we had for fireworks and trying to keep it within that budget. This is incredible that we’re able to double the size of the show.”
The Buzzkills will provide live music at Rotary Beach, starting at 8:15 prior to the drone show.
Other events on July 1 in Eganville include the annual Rotary Breakfast at the Eagle’s Nest, museum boat races at Rotary Beach from 9:30 to 12:30, followed by cup cakes at the museum, a family fun zone all afternoon at the arena, bingo – 2 to 4 – and a barbecue – 4 to 6 – at the Legion and then the evening show.
