JOHNSTOWN – The first two of three shipments of battery packs slated for the Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage System facility arrived at the Port of Johnstown. The first arrived on June 11, while the second arrived June 16.
A total of 140 units have been unloaded and are stored at the port until installation at the facility’s location on Doobie Road between Shanly and Glen Stewart near the Leeds and Grenville/SDG Counties boundary.
“The arrival of the first 2 shipments showcases the Port of Johnstown’s operational strength and the strategic importance of the Highway H2O corridor,” said Edwardsburgh-Cardinal Mayor Tory Deschamps, responding to The Leader. “SkyView 2 will significantly improve grid reliability and capacity while bringing lasting benefits to TWPEC and our region. Council is excited to see SkyView 2’s progress and more so for the opportunity to promote Edwardsburgh/Cardinal as a hub for sustainable, region‑focused infrastructure, innovation and growth.”
Billed as the largest BESS facility in Canada, the Potentia Renewables-owned project broke ground in November 2025. The facility will have a capacity of 411 megawatts and 1,560 megawatt/hours. That is enough capacity to power nearly 400,000 homes.
The Skyview 2 BESS project is one of eight projects like it approved by Ontario’s Ministry of Energy. The facility will store excess electricity generated when use is low, and return it to the electrical grid when needed during peak electricity use periods. These are meant to replace quick-start natural gas-fired power plants which start to add generating capacity to the grid.
A second round of BESS project applications will open soon. The largest BESS facility in the world is the Edwards and Sanborn Solar Plus Storage project in Kern County, California. It has the storage capacity of 3,287 MW per hour.
