Head -Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is one of three Canadian World Heritage sites hosting events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Canada signing the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
Quinton Crow Shoe, site marketing and special events for Head-Smashed- In Buffalo Jump, says it’s an honour to be included in the celebrations.
“They’ve only selected three sites across the nation to host events, so we’re really thankful to the National Trust for Canada for selecting Head- Smashed- In Buffalo Jump as one of the sites to host a celebration.”
The celebration will take place on July 29 beginning at 10:30 a.m. and includes free admission to the site.
The festivities include several Indigenous performers, including the Grassland Singers, Kiitokii, along with other drum groups and dancers; trivia; prize giveaways; buffalo stew samples and a special recognition to a delegate who was instrumental in helping Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump receive their UNESCO delegation.
Patricia Kell, chief executive officer of the National Trust for Canada, says sites like Head- Smashed-In Buffalo Jump are living places shaped by the people and communities who care for them which is cause for celebration.
“This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate and to invite Canadians of all generations to experience these places, interact with their stories and see themselves as part of their future.”
Since the opening of the interpretative centre in 1987, over three million people have walked through the doors and lands of the historical site to learn more about the rich history it holds.
Crow Shoe says like ancient times, the Buffalo Jump continue to provide sustenance for many Blackfoot people, just in a different way.
“It’s been a place that has, for almost 40 years, has continued to eliminate misunderstandings, its helped our people from the community, young and old, to gain a sense of pride…this place has instilled pride and identity in many Blackfoot people.”
The site supports many elders, artists, storytellers and musicians from both the Kainai and Piikani Nations for its programing and gift shop, giving visitors an authentic Blackfoot experience.
During July and August, Head- Smashed- In Buffalo Jump is also hosting drumming and dancing demonstrations every Wednesday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
