Police in Lethbridge saved a man’s life, executed more than 100 arrest warrants and cleared dozens of homeless encampments during a one-day crackdown in the city’s downtown earlier this week.
The Lethbridge Police Service ran the targeted enforcement project Tuesday with help from the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Unit Officers focused on the downtown core as part of an ongoing effort to fight crime and disorder.
The life-saving moment happened in Galt Gardens, a downtown Lethbridge park. Police said officers spotted a suspected drug dealing there. As they moved in a man who had been in contact with the suspect began to show signs of an overdose. Officers gave him, also known as Narcan, and kept helping until paramedics arrived. Police said the 49-year-old man was revived, checked by EMS and medically cleared.
That investigation led to the arrest of a 55-year-old Lethbridge woman. Police said they seized fentanyl packaged for street level sales, other controlled substances, cash and drug paraphernalia.
Patricia Ann Healy 55, faces two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of the proceeds of crime. Police said she was also wanted on several outstanding warrants. She was released after a bail hearing and is due in court Aug. 14.
Officers reported strong results across the day. They executed 107 outstanding warrants, made 26 arrests and laid 15 criminal charges. They also took down more than 60 encampments, cleared away garbage and debris and had more than 70 interactions tied to open drug use, crime or bylaw concerns. Police handled five calls for service, they also spoke with more than 20 residents and business owners in the City Center.
A mix of enforcement, outreach and work with community partners are behind the project, the service said. Lethbridge police use a data driven model called CompStat to pinpoint high crime areas and repeat offenders.
