FORT FRANCES – The town will have to wait a bit longer to adopt their new tagline, as council wasn’t sold on any of the five options.
The town has been looking to replace its tagline since 2024, and after hundreds of submissions and multiple surveys, deputy clerk and communications coordinator Ally Lewis had narrowed it down to five options:
- Where Sunset Country Begins
- Hooked on Rainy Lake
- Canada Plays Here
- Our Northern Light
- Catch the Moment
“I think it’s a great foundation, in my personal opinion I just don’t know if we’re there yet,” said Coun. Kaleb Firth at the June 22 council meeting.
Firth did show interest in “Hooked on Rainy Lake” and “Canada Plays Here,” but said that “there are complications with those.”
Coun. Wendy Brunetta expressed concern that some of the taglines limit what the town is about, saying that she doesn’t want it to appear that Fort Frances is only a fishing community, for example.
“To catch that broad scope of what we want to portray our community as being, I think is the most difficult thing,” Brunetta said.
The town is leaving behind “Boundless,” which has been the town motto since 2014.
Mayor Andrew Hallikas said that a lot of people didn’t know what it meant, and that they wanted something that better represented the town.
“I think it’s important that we’re just not in a great hurry,” said Coun. William Morrison. “We want to get it right so we’re not in the same situation as we are again.”
Morrison said that none of the option struck him, and that the tagline needs to be catchy and memorable.
“You’re never going to please everyone, or please all of us,” Hallikas said in the meeting. “How ever it comes out … This is the community giving us their input, so I really like that.”
Council expressed appreciation for the work of the deputy clerk, who told Newswatch that she has been working on it for nearly a year after the previous deputy clerk had started the project.
