A scholarship for track and field has Meadow Drebert from Breton High School prepping for a trek across the continent.

Her efforts pounding the pavement have earned her an athletic scholarship to the University of New Mexico.

Drebert says she does participate in the school meets in Breton, but she also trains with a club in Leduc, called Leduc Track, three times a week.

“It was one of the best distance clubs,” she says. “I knew I wanted to go there because they have the best coaching.”

Besides training with her team, Drebert also runs three to four days. She does long runs to build her mileage and endurance as well as working on strength and flexibility exercises on her off days.

She says she started running when she was in Grade 6. During one of her school cross country runs, her current coach saw her and asked her to join his club. But at the time, she was still in hockey as well.

“I think every cross country and track meet for like a year-and-a-half he would come up to me and tell me I should join his club,” she says.

When she finally decided on track rather than hockey, she took the coach up on his offer.

For Drebert, the attraction of running is that the point is to better yourself. She says it doesn’t matter where you placed in the race, you could be dead last, but if you beat your previous best it was a great race.

“I like that the results aren’t as important as your time,” she says. Drebert says she feels many other sports are focused on placements, rather than on personal bests. “It’s you and the clock.”

Since she first began running, Drebert says she’s been in around 100 track meets across the province. She says during May, June, and July there’s a meet almost every weekend, and there are lots of events during the winter. There are also normally about five or six cross countries each year.

“It adds up when you’ve been doing it for six years,” she says.

In university, Drebert plans to pursue a degree in exercise science so that she can go into physical therapy.
