Three Medicine Hat residents have been charged in a shooting that seriously injured a local man earlier this month, police say.
The Medicine Hat Police Service say its Major Crimes Unit laid the charges after what the service called, “an extensive investigation”.
Police say staff at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital contacted officers on July 12 to report a man who had arrived with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Officers arrived at the hospital and quickly opened an investigation.
Investigators later determined the man had been shot at a home in the 600 block of Sixth Street SW and he was treated in hospital for his injuries.
Under Alberta’s Gunshot and Stab Wound Mandatory Disclosure Act, health care facilities and emergency medical technicians must notify local police when they treat a gunshot wound.
During the investigation, officers executed search warrants, interviewed witnesses and reviewed a large volume of CCTV footage, police say. They also gathered forensic evidence.
Police say the attack was targeted and involved more than one suspect.
Benjamin Adam, 45, of Medicine Hat, is charged with break and enter, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and discharging a firearm with intent.
Adam is already in provincial custody, he was sentenced on an unrelated matter after these events, police said. He will be brought before the court under a judge’s order to answer the new charges.
Bodana Dye, 45, of Medicine Hat, is charged with aggravated assault. Dye was released by a justice of the peace following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on August 5.
Jade Holt, 26, of Medicine Hat, is also charged with aggravated assault. Holt was likewise released after a bail hearing and is due in court on July 29.
None of the alleged offences have been proven in court.
It is the second violent incident in a Medicine Hat neighbourhood this year that police have described as targeted. Staff Sergeant Darren Lole told the News in May that an April 29 attack in the 300 block of Seventh Street S.E., which sent an injured man to hospital, was also believed to be targeted and not a danger to the public.
Police say no further information will be released because the matter is now before the courts. Anyone with information who has not yet spoken to investigators is asked to call the Medicine Hat Police Service at 403-529-8481.
