After holding their first general meeting a couple of weeks ago, the Filipino community celebrated their first picnic at the Schumacher Lions Club Park on Saturday.
The event lasted until 7 p.m. with various performances, entertainment and games for kids and adults. Participants and organizers were so happy that they couldn’t get better weather for their event. That made the event more fun-filled and colourful for the 60-70 attendees.
“I am happy with the turnout. Everybody is happy in the end,” said the president of the Filipino organization, Estela Chow.
“There were a lot of new people here today, and that’s the most important thing.”
With the success of this event, the community is planning more events in the future. The upcoming event is a Filipino Fiesta on Aug. 20.
“We are going to have a parade for kids on the streets. We are going to serve street food,” said Chow.
Chow also wants the whole community to be united. She says there are still many people out there hesitating to join them. However, she reiterated the idea of multiculturalism once again despite looking to unite the Filipino community together.
“I feel very happy. It removed the stress out from everybody,” Ronnie Boclan, one of the participants, told TimminsToday. He also expressed his willingness to attend future events.
Danny Ansara, the Schumacher Lions Club vice president, is so happy that more communities are coming forward to make it out.
“They want a place to come and relax,” he said.
Ansara also said the situation is “much improved” this year compared to the last two years. He’s grateful for the organizers and participants as they were always keen on keeping the place clean and tidy. As more communities are looking for a place to get together, he says, “if you value your community, please come out.”
As the members of the Filipino community celebrate their picnic at the Schumacher Lions Club Park, Lions Club chair Mark West is also thrilled that people are using the park. He and his hardworking colleagues add more facilities to the park every year.
“I want to see this park booming all the time,” West said.
The Filipino community’s picnic is just the beginning there. When the Filipino community celebrates their day at the park, the Lions Club members are also delighted.
